The review: Absolute gem of a place!

I spent five nights in Norlande and I can hardly find enough words to praise it and Amanda, the owner, to the full extent I think it deserves. I stayed in a gorgeous room with a high tech shower that’s a sauna too (I didn’t try it but liked knowing that!) and the room was so well kitted out I found myself coming home after long days exploring Shetland and not wanting to leave! Breakfast is served in the room and is a great range of continental style food with cereal, juice, croissants, fruit, butter, jam, honey, brioche and an always welcome chocolate treat on your saucer. In the room was also a fridge with yoghurt, more juice and water, a kettle, microwave and toaster. It was so perfect, as when you’re not minded to head out for something to eat you can bring something back and heat it up if need be, and of course, always have that comforting supper of hot toast before crawling into the madly comfortable beds. I totally loved the continental set up as you don’t have to be up for a set time for breakfast but can really suit yourself. And if you fancy cornflakes at midnight, fire away, it’s all there!

The house is toasty warm, with thick pile carpets and warm bed covers that really made my stay perfect as, as well as exploring Shetland, I needed to catch up on sleep and on one day, couldn’t find it in me to crawl out of that cosy bed before 11. It hooked me. The location is great too, just five minutes walk from the centre of Lerwick so close enough to wander back for a rest or if you’ve forgotten something.  An indication of how much thought Amanda puts into the needs of her guests was when I opened a drawer in the bathroom to get out the hairdryer and there was a pair of straighteners too! THAT I have never found anywhere, and I’ve travelled a lot, and it made me grin as I have often sworn pretty loudly when I’ve forgotten mine. I wouldn’t inflict my natural morning hair on anyone, even under a woolly hat in stunning Shetland.

On my last full day, Amanda and her sweet peerie (aka wee, you’ll learn the lingo) son took me out for the day, showing me all over, meeting her friends, and I learned so much about the island from hearing her talk. She is a font of knowledge, great company and so generous with her time and her consideration for her guests. That added value is pretty much priceless.

This place is great value, Amanda is a star, and I can’t imagine going back to Shetland and not staying there. I’m not sure anywhere else would match up. And given that I was genuinely upset when my plane took off from this beautiful land, I reckon it won’t be too long before I’m back again.

Thank you again for everything! Siobhán xxx

Great experience for the one-day visit!

Amanda uses wise and insightful knowledge to demonstrate the interesting culture and history of Shetland. Apart from the plenty of archaeology, local lore and legends told, she also told a lot of stories of her travelling all over the world. Although the weather was stormy and snowy all day, her SUV was steadily and smoothly driven on the road all along. A number of great viewpoints along the coast were visited, and we were on time for a quick lunch at one of the café loved by the locals.

Fabulous Guest House - Best in Shetland

Norlande punching above the weight of what one typically expects of a small local guest house once again. The newly renovated rooms are simply magnificent and Amanda and Family are wonderful charming and helpful hosts.

I’ve had a very pleasant stay & would highly recommend this accommodation if you like a bit of luxury.

My host Amanda was most welcoming & friendly for the duration of my vacation. Amanda, being a local from Shetland is very knowledgeable of the island; & she even specialises in tailor made tours. My room was immaculate. The bed mattress & pillow were extremely comfortable & my towel’s were super soft & smelled amazing. I had all the amenities that I needed for my stay & more. The room was well equipped with a TV, fridge, coffee machine, kettle, microwave, toaster, hairdryer, & a luxurious toiletry bag, it also had a choice of tea/coffee/hot chocolate condiments. The shower pressure was also very good in the bathroom. I had a very well presented cute wicker basket breakfast hamper delivered to my room daily that was overflowing with delicious goodies. Overall my experience at Norlande Guest House was exceptional & I would definitely stay here again. The location was also very convenient to the Ferry Terminal and shops.

Norlande will be our preferred accommodation when we next return to Shetland. Excellent.

A lot of thought went into providing a very comfortable self contained room with everything required. Hamper breakfast is a great idea. Very comfortable bed. Very high standard of cleanliness. Excellent value for money. Quiet but central location with easy parking. Superb host.

Cosy, clean, and inviting - a home away from home.

Clean, homely, and comfortable. Felt completely at home here. It was comforting to know I had such a lovely, warm room to go back to after an exciting day adventuring around the spectacularly rugged Shetland Islands. The breakfast hamper was more than ample enough to fill me up for a heady day of walking across coastal routes and peaty hills and trails. And the bed was super soft and comfortable (and that’s coming from someone who generally doesn’t tend to gel well with hotel bedding - I was out like a light as soon as my head hit the pillow). Also helps that Amanda, the owner, was incredibly friendly and helpful. Even managed to get me set up for an early check in so I didn’t have to wait long after disembarking the Northlink Ferry. Overall, a fantastic find and perfect place to stay during my first of many more to come visits to the Islands. Cosy, peaceful, and ideally located as a base from which to explore the majestic sights across Shetland.

Quiet, convenient, charming, comfortable, and amazing value.

My partner and I stayed here for a couple nights while exploring Lerwick and it was absolutely perfect. It's a short walk to Commercial Street, so it's quiet and comfortable, but also convenient. The price per night was so low compared to the US, that we were not sure what to expect and were blown away by the value. Would 100% stay here again in Shetland. The hamper breakfasts and nice hosts complete the experience.
